Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), dopo un apprendistato presso il
pittore tardo-rococò Vien, si recò a Roma nel 1775 avendo vinto il Prix
de Rome. Il Prix de Rome era una borsa di studio che l’Accademia di
Francia assegnava ai giovani artisti più promettenti per consentire loro
un periodo di soggiorno e di studio nella città eterna. Il David si
trattenne a Roma fino al 1780. Qui ebbe modo sia di conoscere le teorie
artistiche del Winckelmann, sia di studiare l’arte antica e
rinascimentale. Predilesse le pitture di storia, utilizzando episodi
classici da proporre come «esempi di virtù» al mondo contemporaneo.
Infatti il suo fu un neoclassicismo di grossi contenuti etici e virili che
egli opponeva alle mollezze ed effeminatezze del mondo rococò.

(The Frick Collection, New York) Born
in Paris, David studied with Vien, whom he accompanied to Italy after
winning the Prix de Rome in 1774. The leading painter of France a decade
later, he played a major political role in the Revolution and set down
some of its greatest images. David served Napoleon as his official painter.
After the Emperor’s fall, he went into exile in Brussels, where he died.

David (Masters of Art Series) I was looking for a decent picture book
on David who must surely rank as one of the most influential painters on
his time. Unfortunately, most of the great looking picture books are in
French. This book appeared to fill the niche. However, the quality of the
pictures are very disappointing, many of them tending to have a yellowish
