Jan Van Eyck 1390 - 1441 nacque nel 1390 circa e morì a Bruges1444; fu
all'Aia dal 1422 al 1424, al servizio di Giovanni di Baviera conte di
Olanda. A questo periodo risalgono le sette pagine miniate delle Ore di
Torino , di cui quattro andarono distrutte nell'incendio della biblioteca
nazionale (1904), mentre le tre rimanenti si trovano tuttora nel museo
civico. Nel 1425 Jan passo' alla Lille al servizio del duca di Borgogna ,
Filippo il buono , del quale fu non solo pittore ufficiale ma anche intimo
amico , consigliere e agente segreto. Si sa di due missioni all'estero,
nel 1426 e nel 1428.9 , quest'ultima in Portogallo per trattare il
matrimonio della figlia del re con il duca , e che determino' l'inizio
della profonda influenza dell'arte fiamminga su quella Portoghese. Nel
1430 , si stabilì a Bruges , dove rimase fino alla morte. Attribuibile a
prima del 1432 e' il nucleo di dipinti che mostra già' la piena maturità
del pittore (Madonna in chiesa, 1425-1427, ). Le opere firmate che ci
rimangono, circa una decina , includono i coniugi Arnolfini (1434, Londra,
National Gallery), la madonna del cancelliere Rolin ( 1433, Parigi, Louvre)
, la Madonna di Lucca(1436, Francoforte, Stadelsches Kunstinstitut), la
scultorea Madonna del canonico van der Paele (1436) per finire con
la ritrattistica. Anche in questa rivoluzionò l'impianto tradizionale ,
portando attenzione tutta sul volto del modello: il Timoteo, l'uomo col
turbante rosso, Jan de Leeuw, la moglie Margaretha van Eyck. L'influenza
dell'opera di Jan van Eyck fu vastissima non solo in patria ma anche
in Italia soprattutto attraverso Antonello da Messina nella penisola
Iberica tramite Dalmau e nell'area tedesca.
Jan van Eyck (The Frick
Collection, New York) Born probably at Maaseyck in the province of
Limburg, Jan van Eyck is first recorded in 1422 working at The Hague for
John of Bavaria, the Count of Holland. In 1425 he was named court painter
and “valet de chambre” to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, for whom
he also undertook frequent diplomatic missions. Most of his datable
paintings were executed during the 1430s in Bruges, where he spent the
