Nipote di Sigmund Freud, è nato a Berlino nel 1922. Nel
1933 è emigrato con la famiglia a Londra, dove tuttora vive e lavora. Apprezzato
disegnatore sin dagli anni Quaranta, ha visto le sue opere di pittura
celebrate in importanti mostre antologiche a Londra, Parigi, Berlino,
Madrid, Washington e, nel 1993, al Metropolitan Museum di New York. E'
considerato tra i più grandi pittori figurativi del nostro secolo.
Lucian Freud
was
born December 8, 1922 in Berlin, son of Lucie Brasch and Ernst Freud. In Autumn
1938 Freud enrolled at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. The following year
he began working at the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting at Dedham,
run by Cedric Morris, and spent most of his time there until April 1941 when he
signed on a vessel in the Merchant Navy, staying three months, and returning
occasionally to the school which had moved to Hadleigh in Suffolk. In 1939 and
1943 Freud's work was published in Horizon magazine and a room of his paintings
was hung at the Lefvre Gallery in 1944. Freud spent the Autumn of 1946 in Paris
and then travelled on to Greece. In 1948 he married Kitty Garman, daughter of
Jacob Epstein, and in 1952 married Caroline Blackwood. He rented a flat in
Delamere Terrace in 1943 and stayed in that area of Paddington for the next
thirty years before moving to Holland Park. In 1951 he won an Arts Council
purchase prize for his contribution to the Festival of Britain. He was a
visiting tutor at the Slade from 1949 to 1954 and on odd occasions in later
years. Lawrence Gowing wrote a monograph on Freud published by Thames and Hudson
in 1982. Lucian Freud is represented by Acquavella Contemporary Art Inc., in New
