capolavori di diciotto maestri, da Giotto a Leonardo, da Altdorfer a
Bruegel, da Caravaggio a Rembrandt, in modo originale, con particolari
in dimensioni del tutto inconsuete che mettono in risalto i materiali,
le tecniche, il gesto pittorico. Il lettore viene coinvolto in prima
persona e messo quindi in grado di "toccare con mano" la
materia pittorica e di riconoscere le capacità eccezionali di questi
artisti. Il volume è organizzato in diciotto capitoli, composti da una
presentazione del maestro e didascalie riferite a ogni opera presa in
esame. L'arco di tempo, che abbraccia tutta la pittura moderna, dal XIV

immagini grottesche e violente in cui Goya smaschera vizi e ipocrisie
della sua epoca, per analizzare l'opera dell'artista ma anche
l'immaginario di fine Settecento, nel quale predominano i concetti di
"rivoluzione" e di "carnevale", entrambi
rivolgimenti di un ordine costituito. In quest'opera vengono presi in
esame temi e immagini ricorrenti come i mondi alla rovescia, in cui le
gerarchie tra servi e padroni, tra uomini e animali, maschile e
femminile sono invertite; ma anche i mondi visionari di de Sade,
attingendo da un vasto patrimonio di fonti che spaziano dai miti
classici alla satira politica, dalla chimica alla letteratura

Madrid. He was in Italy in 1770/71, and in 1774 he became
a designer for the Royal Tapestry Factory. Appointed
court painter to Charles III in 1786, he continued to
hold that post under Charles IV and Ferdinand VII. In
addition to portraits, Goya painted historical, religious, and genre
subjects, bitter satires, and
demonological fantasies; he also was a brilliant graphic artist. In 1824, out of favor with the court, he left

fine reproductions as the original 1994 hardcover. Goya was one of
Spain's greatest and most controversial painters, famous for incisive
portraits and the "black" paintings of his later years.
Scholars have often attributed Goya's progression from producing
light-hearted court paintings to creating somber images of the
Napoleonic wars to the artist's serious illness of 1792, which left him
deaf. Writer Janis Tomlinson's aim here is to show a continuity in his
work before and after the illness. She sees in Goya's vast output--at
least 1,800 works--a vital drive to explore and exploit his personal
creativity, which was strengthened by the deafness that cut him off from
all but visual communication with the world. With detail supported by
formidable research, Tomlinson presents Goya's life chronologically,
analyzing his work from icons like the Naked Maya to his Los
Caprichos series of etchings with their biting social satire and
supernatural imaginings of a world turned upside down. The demonic
intensity of Saturn Devouring His Son and Witches Sabbath,
painted on the walls of his "Country House of a Deaf Man" at
the end of his life, suggest to some the work of an embittered madman.
Rather, these disturbing paintings reflect Goya's profound empathy for
the victims of a predatory and unjust society--empathy that a modern
