Wade Hoefer: Since 1994, Bay Area painter Wade Hoefer has spent numerous residencies at Aurobora Press. Each time he returns to the Aurobora studio, Hoefer creates monotypes that continue to explore his signature landscapes inspired by the scenery of Northern California. Hoefer's monotypes have a meditative quality that allows the viewer to escape into an idealized landscape where his imagery taps into a collective solitude that seduces the viewer and gives an expectation, a feeling of promise yet unrealized. In Hoefer's large scale monotypes, the artist used a limited palette of ochers, umbers, and sepias. Hoefer passed his plates through the press several times applying handwork between each run of the press. Finally a central image, or "luminoso", is printed separately and affixed to the larger background image. After the monotypes are completed, Hoefer mixes pigments with a wax medium to coat the entire surface with a rich and lustrous layer that blends both images together seamlessly.
