Jawlensky, Alexej von Although Jawlensky is most frequently identified with the German Expressionist painters, he never aligned himself exclusively with any twentieth century stylistic movement. Instead, he perfected a highly personal form influenced heavily by his deep religious convictions and a strong attraction to the mysticism of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Jawlensky knew the work of Matisse from his trips to Paris. He has taken the palpable brushstrokes and powerful, flowing colors of Matisse and enclosed them in broad outlines, further flattening the surface and emphasizing a bold, striking visage. Although Jawlensky's early works were influenced by the Fauves as well as the German Expressionists, he believed his art mirrored a spirituality found in his own past: "Every artist works in a tradition," he wrote. "Some take their tradition from the art of the Greeks, others from that of the Renaissance. I am Russian born. As such, my heart and soul have always felt close to old Russian art, to Russian icons, the art of Byzantium.... All these arts would set up a holy vibration in my soul for they spoke to me in a language of deep spirituality. It was this art that gave me tradition."
