Klee, Paul was born in Switzerland in 1879. His
parents were musicians, and for a time he considered pursuing a career in
music. In 1911 Klee met Wassily Kandinsky, as well as Franz Marc and
Alexei Jawlensky, and joined the Blue Rider (Blaue Reiter) group, a loose
circle of artists who believed in the spiritual essence underlying all the
arts. While one can trace influences and associations, his work is not
identifiable with any "school." Klee's singular style of
abstraction and ornamentation, whimsy and melancholy, was influenced by
his music, his travels, his self-education as an artist, and his own
unique sense of humor. In 1920 Klee was invited to teach at the Bauhaus in
Weimar, Germany. There he met Scheyer who would later represent the works
of Klee, Kandinsky, Jawlensky and Feininger in the United States under the
name of the "Blue Four." The Tree of Houses typifies Klee's
experiments with a variety of materials and techniques. In this case, he
has painted over strips of gauze and paper, creating a rich and tactile
surface. A fanciful apartment complex emerges out of a forest, its various
levels connected by ladders. In this image, a solitary figure begins his
ascent... Norton Simon

Books: Paul
Klee by Jean-Louis Ferrier. Paperback (May 1999) This colorful
monograph features and surveys the 150 best-known works of Paul Klee, an
artist famous for the playful complexity of his multi-media images. Klee
never ceased his quest for new subjects and sources of inspiration, and he
experimented with geometry, materials, and color to represent fauna and
flora, music, the diurnal, and the nocturnal. As a teacher at the famous
Bauhaus School in Weimar, Klee played an important role in the evolution
of applied arts. Author Jean-Louis Ferrier provides an insightful text
that explains the complex, often misunderstood work of Klee. In addition,
this monograph includes extracts from Klee's theatrical work, including
the famous Pedagogical Sketchbook used by his students at the Bauhaus.
Comprehensive and fresh, this new study of Paul Klee will delight students
and enthusiasts of twentieth-century art. Diaries
of Paul Klee, 1898-1918 by Paul Klee, Felix Klee (Editor). Paperback (December
1964), Klee
