Barcelona and Modernity: Picasso, Gaudi, Miro, Dali Yale University Press During the years after the September Revolution of 1868, Barcelona experienced tremendous industrial growth and emerged as the most politically and culturally progressive city in Spain. Barcelona and Modernity examines this remarkable seventy-one-year period, when Barcelona also reigned as one of the most dynamic centers of modernist art and architecture in Europe. Focusing on the Catalan Renaixenca, Modernisme, Noucentisme, avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, and artistic reactions to the Spanish Civil War, essays by an extraordinary international team of scholars offer new insights into the work of such Catalan artists as Antoni Gaudi, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Salvador Dali, among others, by setting them in context with the art of their teachers, colleagues, and rivals. With approximately 350 works in a variety of media - painting, sculpture, photography, furniture, decorative arts, and architectural design - this intriguing book also explores how Catalan artists derived inspiration from local traditions while contributing their own innovations to international modernism. Broader in scope than any previous treatment of the subject, this book is sure to alter popular perceptions of Catalonia and become a fundamental text for years to come.

Artinvest Mirò Juan

Mirò, Joan Spanish painter, whose surrealist works, with their subject matter drawn from the realm of memory and imaginative fantasy, are some of the most original of the 20th century. Miró was born April 20, 1893, in Barcelona and studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and the Academia Galí. His work before 1920 shows wide-ranging influences, including the bright colors of the Fauves, the broken forms of cubism, and the powerful, flat two-dimensionality of Catalan folk art and Romanesque church frescoes of his native Spain. He moved to Paris in 1920, where, under the influence of surrealist poets and writers, he evolved his mature style. Miró drew on memory, fantasy, and the irrational to create works of art that are visual analogues of surrealist poetry. These dreamlike visions, such as Harlequin's Carnival or Dutch Interior, often have a whimsical or humorous quality, containing images of playfully distorted animal forms, twisted organic shapes, and odd geometric constructions. The forms of his paintings are organized against flat neutral backgrounds and are painted in a limited range of bright colors, especially blue, red, yellow, green, and black. Amorphous amoebic shapes alternate with sharply drawn lines, spots, and curlicues, all positioned on the canvas with seeming nonchalance. Miró later produced highly generalized, ethereal works in which his organic forms and figures are reduced to abstract spots, lines, and bursts of colors. Miró also experimented in a wide array of other media, devoting himself to etchings and lithographs for several years in the 1950s and also working in watercolor, pastel, collage, and paint on copper and masonite. His ceramic sculptures are especially notable, in particular his two large ceramic murals for the UNESCO building in Paris (Wall of the Moon and Wall of the Sun, 1957-59). Miró died in Majorca, Spain, on December 25, 1983....Mcs

Miro on Mallorca Catoir, Barbara ; Prestel From his childhood on, Mallorca was to be a second home for Joan Miro. His mother hailed from the island, as did his wife Pilar Juncosa. A refuge for many Republicans, Mallorca became Miro's permanent place of abode from the mid-1950s onward. He acquired a plot of land overlooking the Bahia de Palma, upon which he commissioned his friend Josep Lluis Sert to build a spacious studio. He died there in 1983 at the age of ninety. Miro on Mallorca concerns itself primarily with the varied themes and techniques of the artist's later works - painting, sculpture, prints, and ceramics - which, with the exception of the latter, were all created in his studios on the island. It was the clear light of Mallorca that especially fascinated Miro - the poetic blues of the sky and the sea. In his sculpture, he was especially inspired by the artistic creativity of the island inhabitants, not to mention the agriculture and the precipitous cliffs which give the landscape of Mallorca its unique quality.
Constellations of Miro, Breton de Paul Hammond During the early days of the Second World War, the Catalan painter Joan Miró created a startling series of twenty-three gouaches, his Constellations, works redolent of the nightmare of contemporary event. In 1958 the French poet André Breton composed his own Constellations, a set of hermetic prose poems meant to "illustrate"--that is, not simply to shed light on, but to lend luster to--Miró's paintings, and to resume a peripatetic dialogue about exile.
