In presenting their case, the authors take the reader from the workshop of Filippo Lippi in Florence to Urbino, capital of Federico da Montefeltro's duchy in the region of the Marches. It was a road most memorably traveled by Piero della Francesca, who worked in Florence in 1439 and became Federico's favorite artist. Piero della Francesca Artcyclopedia 1410/20–1492 Born in the Tuscan town of Borgo Sansepolcro, Piero is first recorded in 1439 assisting Domenico Veneziano in Florence. He also worked in his birthplace and in Ferrara, Rimini, Rome, Urbino, and elsewhere. Piero’s best-known paintings form the celebrated fresco cycle depicting the Legend of the True Cross in the church of S. Francesco at Arezzo. Books: Piero Della Francesca by Maurizio Calvesi, Andrew Ellis (Translator) More than any other Italian 15th-century painter, Piero della Francesca was responsible for the development of Renaissance painting in Florence, and its crucial dissemination throughout Italy. His work represents a synthesis of Italian painting, with its focus on perspective and space, and Netherlandish painting, which stressed light and natural phenomena. From his formative years in Florence, when he worked with Domenico Veneziano in the church of Sant'Egidio, to his seminal mid-career frescoes in the church of San Francesco in Arezzo, and his later work in Rome, Perugia, and Urbino, these pages capture Piero's extraordinary palette, his development of perspective, and the remarkably expressive faces of his subjects.
