van Rijn's paintings made him the star of the seventeenth-century Dutch
golden age, but he was also an extraordinarily productive and original
printmaker. In more than 300 known etchings, he covered the full range of
subjects and styles for which he is celebrated, including self-portraits,
scenes from the Bible, landscapes, vignettes of everyday life and
character studies. Each of his prints is both a beautiful work in itself
and an X-ray of the strategies of composition and scene-setting that went
into his paintings. "Rembrandt as Printmaker" presents 69 of
Rembrandt's finest prints from The British Museum, which is widely
considered to hold the world's broadest collection. It is published on the
occasion of the four-hundred-year anniversary of the artist's birth.
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn b. 1606 Leyden, The
Netherlands, d. 1669 Amsterdam Dutch draftsman, engraver, painter Born to
a miller and a baker's daughter, it was said that Rembrandt van Rijn was
made of "a different flour." Despite his ambitions, he never
visited Italy. After studying locally, he apprenticed with Pieter Lastman
in Amsterdam. Lastman imparted to Rembrandt his taste for religious and
allegorical subjects and exposed him to Caravaggio's stylistic lessons.
But the more profound aspect of Rembrandt's art, the compassion and
sympathy for humanity, was Rembrandt's own, present in his sharp, early
Baroque style and in his later pictorial symphonies of texture, gesture,
and quiet drama. Returning to Leyden around 1624, Rembrandt worked
independently and collaborated with Jan Lievensz. He painted varied
subjects, including many self-portraits. Around 1631, he moved to
Amsterdam, becoming its leading painter and a wealthy man. He began using
canvas rather than panel, experimented with paints of different fluidities,
and explored etching. His wife's death in 1642 roughly coincided with
Bartholomeus van der Helst's introduction of Anthony van Dyck's more
ostentatious style, which suited public taste more than Rembrandt's
introspection. Refusing to adapt his style to prevailing fashion, in 1656,
nearly bankrupt, Rembrandt moved to a poor section of town with his
mistress, Hendrickje Stoffels, and his only living child, Titus. Having
survived both Hendrickje and Titus, Rembrandt died poor and alone. However,
he was an inspiring teacher whose pupils included Gerrit Dou, Aert de
Gelder, Govaert Flinck, and Nicolaes Maes. ...Getty

(The Frick Collection, New
York) Rembrandt first studied art in his native Leyden and later
worked under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Around 1625 he returned to
Leyden, but in 1631/32 he settled permanently in Amsterdam. Although he
enjoyed a great reputation and pupils flocked to him, he suffered
financial difficulties that led to insolvency in 1656. By 1660 most of his
debts were settled, and his last years were spent in relative comfort.
Rembrandt painted many portraits, biblical scenes, and historical subjects.

obscure followers. This lavishly illustrated book, containing essays by
some of the world's leading scholars on seventeenth-century Dutch art, is
the first critical review of the present state Rembrandt studies finds
