L'esposizione, curata da Claudio Spadoni, è finalizzata a una rilettura delle opere e degli artisti contemporanei che hanno sollecitato le riflessioni di un grande critico d'arte come Roberto Longhi. Dall'Impressionismo al Futurismo, dai Fauves a Morandi, da Carrà a Magnelli, Kandinskij, Klee e Picasso, la mostra presenta oltre un centinaio di opere, tra oli, sculture e disegni. Il catalogo ripercorre le fasi del percorso critico longhiano, proponendo una sequenza di opere che rispecchia tale svolgimento e che in quanto tale non corrisponde all'abituale ordine storico-cronologico. Renoir 1841–1919 (The Frick Collection, New York) Born in Limoges, Renoir was four when his family moved to Paris. He began his career as a painter of porcelain, but at twenty-one he entered Gleyre’s studio and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts. He first showed at the Salon in 1864, and ten years later he took part in the inaugural Impressionist exhibition, which he hung. After visits to Algeria and Italy in 1881–82 his work began to diverge from that of the Impressionists toward a more classical tradition. Crippled with arthritis in old age, he nevertheless continued to paint and to produce sculpture. Renoir died at Cagnes. Works in the Collection: Mother and Children

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Art online - La città dell'arte): Limoges, 1841 Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919 Nel 1862, a Parigi, frequenta l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts e contemporaneamente lo studio di Gleyre. Là incontra Sisley, Bazille e Monet con i quali si reca nella foresta di Fontainebleau per dipingere "en plein air". Dopo l'incontro con Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, la sua pittura adotta toni più chiari e luminosi. Nel 1865 si lega a Lise Tréhot che poserà per lui come più tardi farà Aline Charigot, sua moglie dal 1890. Nel 1872, ad Argenteuil, dipinge spesso in compagnia di Monet. Nel 1874 partecipa alla prima mostra degli impressionisti. Tra il 1874 e il 1877, nonostante le ristretezze economiche, dipinge alcuni capolavori tra cui Il Moulin de la Galette.Nel salotto di Madame Charpentier incontra persone facoltose che gli commissionano soprattutto ritratti. Tra il 1879 e il 1881 nascono opere importanti tra cui La colazione dei canottieri. Nel 1881, in Italia, rimane colpito da Raffaello e dagli affreschi pompeiani. Sente che la sua pittura ha bisogno di maggior rigore: tra il 1883 e il 1887 il suo stile si evolve verso una maniera da lui stesso definita "agra" che culmina nei netti contorni delle Grandi bagnati. Con gli anni Novanta, fama e ricchezza sono raggiunte (decisiva la retrospettiva allestita da Durand-Ruel nel 1892). Nel 1898 si ammala di una grave forma reumatica ma continua a dipingere fino alla morte: Le bagnanti, del 1918-1919, è il suo testamento pittorico
