camera provides high picture quality in a top-of-the-line
SLR format. This camera offers an exceptional
2.5-million-pixel CCD and an uncompressed TIFF option for
extremely detailed or professional work. The Olympus
C-2500 SLR digital camera, which is shaped very much like
a regular SLR, is surprisingly lightweight and easy to hold, despite its long
lens. We were impressed with the
speed at which this camera took pictures; we didn't have
to wait long between shots, as with most digital cameras.
Because it lets you view through the actual lens, however, you can't use the LCD screen to compose your
pictures; you can only use the LCD screen to view your
pictures after you've shot them. The jog dial menu system
was a bit hard to figure out at first, but once we read
the manual, it was relatively easy to work with. We liked
the super macro mode, which lets you get extremely close
to your subject--within 0.8 inches. Other noteworthy
details are that the Olympus C-2500 uses a pop-up flash
with red-eye reduction and is one of the few digital
cameras to offer both rear- and front-curtain flash synch
for slow shutter speeds. The C-2500 also lets you select
between 100, 200, and 400 film speeds--an unusual feature
in a digital camera. One of the most useful features in
this SLR digital camera is its ability to take both
SmartMedia and CompactFlash memory cards. It comes with
one slot for each, and you can put in both types of card
at the same time for extra memory. You can even copy
images from one card to the other in the camera. The
Olympus C-2500 SLR digital camera comes with a generous
32 MB of SmartMedia memory. It also comes with four NiMH
rechargeable AA batteries and charger, which is very
handy since the camera drains batteries so quickly.
 Olympus D-400 Zoom Digital

The Olympus D-400 Zoom combines easy-to-use automatic
operation with higher-end advanced features to create a
digital camera that both novices and experienced
photographers will enjoy using. Its relatively slim form
and uncompressed image-recording abilities set this
digital camera above its competitors. Getting started
with the D-400 Zoom is easy--we just popped the batteries
and smart card in and were ready to take pictures. The
D-400 Zoom provides several recording modes, ranging in
resolution and compression. For users wanting the
absolute best-quality digital image, Olympus offers
uncompressed TIFF recording mode, which lets you save
only one or two uncompressed images on a memory card. At
the other end of the spectrum, in Standard Quality (SQ)
mode, you can record 122 images with 640-by-480
resolution--good for pictures destined to end up on a Web
site. For mid-range quality images, you can take pictures
at 1280-by-960 resolution with standard or minimum compression. The D-400 Zoom is one of the few digital
cameras with an optical (versus digital) zoom, making for
sharper closeups. It also has a 2x digital zoom, for a
total zoom power of 6x. This digital camera offers a good
range of exposure and focusing options, letting you
switch to spot metering for unusual focusing situations
and adjust the exposure up to two stops in either
direction. The four preset white-balance adjustments are
a handy feature for shooting inside homes (where
incandescent lights tend to give everything a yellow
cast) or in the office (where fluorescent lights cast a
greenish pall over scenes). Like many digital cameras,
the D-400 Zoom is a stellar performer in low light,
focusing in near darkness. As long as you have a tripod
or something sturdy to place the camera on, this model is
a good choice for nighttime cityscapes, fireworks, and
indoor conditions where you'd prefer not to use a flash.
The D-400 Zoom is by no means slim and lightweight
compared with traditional or APS film cameras. However,
it is sleek and stylish for a digital camera, using Olympus's trademark sliding lens cover, which also makes
it easy to turn the camera on and off. The only real
drawback to the D-400 Zoom is its short battery life. We
were able to take only 60 pictures in the
lowest-resolution mode before the four Duracell AAs gave
out. Olympus recognizes this shortcoming in the manual
and encourages you to buy rechargeable batteries, but it
would have been nice if rechargeables and a charger were
included with the camera. Overall, though, the D-400 Zoom
gives us just about everything we could want in a
point-and-shoot digital camera.
 Olympus D-620L Digital Camera
$599.88 The Olympus D-620L gives you high
1,280 x 1,024 resolution, a range of flash and exposure options, and a 3x zoom lens--plus
professional-level,
single-lens-reflex construction. Just as traditional 35mm
SLRs are significantly larger than point-and-shoots, the
Olympus D-620L is much bulkier than other non-SLR digital cameras, including
Olympus's own point-and-shoot digitals. However, the added bulk is the price paid for
improved optics, picture quality, and the advantage of
being able to frame your image with precision before you
snap the picture. The through-the-lens viewfinder design
means you can't use the LCD screen as a viewfinder--you
can only use it for image playback. This is a fairly
significant drawback if you like to see your picture on
the LCD screen before you take it; otherwise it's not an issue. The Olympus D-620L uses removable SmartMedia cards
for memory; it comes with an 8 MB card, which holds about
100 images in the lowest resolution. It also includes a
battery charger for the four AA Ni-MH batteries--a nice touch, especially since it drains batteries quickly
(like
all digital cameras). The included pop-up flash has a
good range of options, including red-eye reduction, fill-flash, and off. The Olympus D-620L also lets you use
an optional extension flash--a great feature if you want
more professional-looking photos. The Olympus D-620L lets
you adjust exposure manually by three stops in either
direction; in addition, it has spot metering and macro functions. The digital
camera's three preset focus
settings (1.3 feet, 8 feet, and infinity) can be useful
in situations where the autofocus has trouble. Unfortunately, the
autofocus's contrast detection system
has difficulty in dim conditions, and the camera won't
let you take a picture if the autofocus isn't set. We
found this to be major inconvenience indoors, where even
standard indoor lighting was often too dark to take a picture. The Olympus D-620L
doesn't let you manually
adjust focus either (other than providing focus-lock capability).
